It sets the <strong>width<\/strong> of the tolerance zone, independent of where that zone sits relative to the nominal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>letter<\/strong> sets the <strong>position<\/strong> of the zone; we\u2019ll cover letters next.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of limits and fits, you might specify a dimension like <strong>25 mm \u00b10.15 mm<\/strong>, which means any measured size inside that band passes inspection. IT grades express the same idea more compactly with a single number tied to nominal size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example.<\/strong> For a <strong>40 mm<\/strong> nominal hole, selecting <strong>IT7<\/strong> gives a zone <strong>25 \u00b5m (0.025 mm)<\/strong> wide. That width could be centered on nominal (\u00b112.5 \u00b5m) or shifted up or down depending on the letter you choose later. The grade sets <strong>only<\/strong> the width.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The limits and fits system uses <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IT_Grade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Tolerance Grades<\/a>. For example, a 40 mm diameter hole falls within the &#8220;<strong>&gt; 30<\/strong>&#8221; to &#8220;<strong>\u2264 50<\/strong>&#8221; mm range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving across that row to the selected <strong>International Tolerance Grade (IT Grade)<\/strong> column provides the tolerance width. For our 40 mm part, selecting <strong>IT7<\/strong> gives a total tolerance width of 25 \u00b5m (or 0.025 mm). Note that the units change from micrometres (\u00b5m) to millimetres (mm) for coarser grades (IT12 and higher).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <strong>IT Grade only sets the width<\/strong>, not the position. This distinction is crucial because maintaining the same tolerances, such as +\/- 0.063 mm, becomes more challenging with larger nominal dimensions. For instance, achieving these tolerances on a 100 mm diameter shaft is more difficult and expensive than on a 30 mm shaft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tighter tolerances lead to a rapid increase in manufacturing costs. This is due to the additional time, setups, and inspection required for finishing processes like fine grinding, lapping, and selective rework. The impact on cost is also greater for larger nominal sizes; for instance, maintaining a tolerance of \u00b10.063 mm on a \u00d8100 mm shaft is more challenging and expensive than on a \u00d830 mm shaft.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-position-of-the-tolerance-zone\"><strong>The Position of the Tolerance Zone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<p>While the IT Grade number (e.g., the &#8216;7&#8217; in <strong>H7<\/strong>) defines the <em>width<\/em> of the tolerance zone, the letter (e.g., the &#8216;H&#8217;) defines its <em>position<\/em> relative to the nominal size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capital letters<\/strong> (e.g., H, G, K) are used for holes (internal features).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lowercase letters<\/strong> (e.g., h, g, k) are used for shafts (external features).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the ISO system, this letter specifies the <strong>fundamental deviation<\/strong>, which tells us where the tolerance zone <em>starts<\/em> in relation to the nominal diameter, or &#8220;zero line&#8221;.
