H7/g6 fit - is it too tight for manual assembly?

Hi, I’m using a limits-and-fits guide to spec a bearing housing. I’m looking at an H7/g6 fit for a sliding location, but this is a field-repaired unit. If I go that tight, is some tech with a hammer going to destroy it in the field? Should I open it up to a looser clearance fit, or will that cause too much “slop” over time?

      Good question – and you’re thinking about the right failure mode. An H7/g6 is technically a sliding fit, but it’s still fairly controlled. In a clean shop with properly aligned and light-press tools, no problem. In the field, though? Dirt, minor bore distortion, thermal mismatch, and “persuasion tools” change the equation fast.

      If a technician is realistically installing this without precision fixtures, I’d be cautious. A tight clearance fit can turn into an unintended interference if the housing gets nicked or slightly ovalized. That’s when the hammer comes out – and that’s when things get damaged.

      Before loosening it up, ask: What is actually controlling alignment? If the bearing’s function depends on precise concentricity and minimal radial play, opening to something like H8/f7 might introduce measurable movement over time. But if axial retention and alignment are handled elsewhere, you can relax the fit.
