Can I prototype in plastic before final aluminium production?

Hello! I’m working on a project where precise fit is critical, and I’m considering using plastic for the initial prototype to save costs. My main concern is whether the difference in material properties (like stiffness and thermal expansion) between plastic and aluminum could affect the accuracy of the fit. Has anyone had experience with this approach, and are there specific considerations I should keep in mind when transitioning from a plastic prototype to a metal final part? Thank you

Absolutely, this is a common approach, and we often use 3D printing to prototype components that will eventually be machined, molded, or cast. It's a great way to verify fit and function before committing to more expensive materials like aluminum. If you’re going to prototype with CNC machining, I’d recommend using 6061-T6 aluminum as it's typically the most cost-effective option for the final part
