FSAE Upright Material

We are in the process of finalizing the design of the running gear for our single-seater for the Formula Student and we are currently focusing on the choice of material for the upright, which is a critical component of our system. To optimize the performance of our single-seater, we have identified the following characteristics as essential for the upright material:
- Fatigue resistance: Given the dynamic loads to which the upright will be subjected during races, we are looking for a material capable of withstanding long-term fatigue. What are the most suitable materials for this requirement?
- Mechanical properties: We aim to maximize the stiffness and strength of the upright while minimizing its weight. Which materials offer the best compromise between strength, stiffness, and specific weight?
- Thermal compatibility: Due to the thermal stresses generated by repeated braking and aerodynamic loads, we are looking for a material capable of maintaining its mechanical properties under high temperature conditions. Which materials have good thermal stability in this context?
- Fabricability: We also take into account the feasibility of manufacturing the component, including the availability of materials at Xometry and compatible manufacturing processes. Which materials can be machined or manufactured by other methods with high precision and optimal efficiency?
We would appreciate specific recommendations based on technical data and practical experiences in the field of materials engineering and automotive component manufacturing (and notably in motorsport).
