Passivation of stainless steel for harsh environment

Hello!

I’m working on a part that will be used in a harsh environment, so I was thinking of stainless steel 304 as a suitable material. I also would like to add a passivation finish to improve the corrosion resistance of the part.

Are there standardized grades or methods of passivation for stainless steel? What “grade” or specific type of passivation should I specify on the engineering drawing to ensure optimal corrosion resistance? There’s lots of info out there, but I’m a bit confused. Can anyone offer some straightforward guidelines?

There are indeed several standards and types of passivation.

The main standard grades you have available are: ASTM A967, AMS 2700 and ISO 16048.

In order to have a to ensure optimal corrosion I would specify "Passivate per ASTM A967, Citric Acid Method" on your engineering drawing.

ASTM A967: This standard covers the chemical passivation treatments for stainless steel, ensuring the part meets industry standards.
Citric Acid Passivation: It's environmentally safer and effective for stainless steel 304.
