What Is DMLS? How Does It Work?
Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) is a laser powder bed fusion technology used to create high-strength metal parts. It is widely recognized for its ability to produce complex geometries and functional metal components with excellent mechanical properties that would not be possible to manufacture otherwise. DMLS is also known as Selective Laser Melting (SLM), or Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM).
The process begins with a thin layer of metal powder evenly spread across the build platform. A high-powered laser selectively melts the powder particles together, solidifying each layer according to the design. This process is repeated layer by layer until the part is complete. Dedicated support structures are required to stabilize overhangs and complex features during printing, as well as to manage thermal stresses caused by the laser’s high temperatures.
DMLS works with a variety of metal alloys, including stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, and Inconel, making it ideal for industries such as aerospace, automotive, and healthcare.
DMLS printed parts come out as solid, fully-dense objects with a matte grain surface. They are usually bead blasted but can also be post-machined or polished depending on their requirements. Materials like steel can also be heat-treated to achieve the required hardness.
